Day 23 - Zubiri to Villava - August 7

Day 23 - Zubiri to Villava - August 7

Well the taxi came promptly at 6:30 am and took us back to Zubiri. My Weather Channel app said it was going to rain all night last night and all day today. I asked the woman that worked at the hotel and she it wasn't going to rain. I also asked the taxi driver and he said it would be cloudy but no rain the locals are good weather predictors. We had the taxi take us to a panadería recommended by the woman that worked at the hotel. It didn't open until 7 am and the the lady hand squeezed the orange juice. You can't get much fresher than that. So we got on the road about 7:30.

Before leaving the panadería I decided to use the bathroom. I got in and turned on the light and, much to my surprise there was a huge spider in the toilet bowl. I was like, "whoa! Maybe I don't need to use the toilet." Upon closer, but not too close, I mean I didn't stick my head in the bowl, it turned out to be a decal. lol I guess it is target practice for the guys.

Our walk today followed the Arga river. Last year there had been a drought so it wasn't much to look at, but after the heavy rains and snow this Spring and early summer it is full and beautiful.

There were lots of uphill and downhills, but nothing like the last three days. All the toes on my left foot except the big toe were screaming all day. I think they were about to start a mutiny and jump ship. That would make balancing very difficult. My right foot is fine. I think my left foot must be bigger than my right foot or swelled more, because the toes seem to be getting banged and my toe rings on that foot felt uncomfortable too. Oh well.

I saw a big dog and little dog walking around loose. This is somewhat unusual but they just walked by me. But apparently the big dog frightened my little friend Magdelena that I met in Orisson. I saw her and her mother shortly after it happened. I saw the dad and the son a short while later and dad was carrying the son's pack as well as his own. The son was limping a little. He didn't look like a happy camper. It's probably a good thing they are only going to Pamplona, where they will be tomorrow.

I stopped in Villava, because I was a little tired. I could have gone on to Pamplona, but I just spent two days there, so it was really important to me. Bruce and Darlene (turns out Arlene is really Darlene) went to Pamplona because they liked the hotel they stayed in there before I met them at the bus station. Juan was also going to Pamplona.

The municipal albergue was a little hard to find, but I asked someone for directions and found it. I got checked in, got a bed that is a single decker, not a bunk bed. Then I took a shower, washed my clothes, hung the clothes on the line, and went to have a café next door in the bar. Just as I was finishing  my café a tormenta (storm) started. Isn't that a wonderful word for storm, tormenta? So I ran back to the albergue and got very wet getting my clothes off the line. I hung them inside. I hope my long sleeve top drys or I will be walking in the rain in my tank top. Of course, I do have the rain poncho that I found at the albergue in Saint Jean, but I don't know how warm that would be. I can't believe I sent my rain jacket and fleece to Bercianos because I figured it is summer, I won't need them until I get to Galicia at the end of September. Wrong! Oh well. :)

After the clothes debacle, I met another new friend. His name is íakie (Yaki) he lives in San Sebastion and is doing his fourth Camino on a bicycle. He is a music teacher and teaches students from three years old to fifteen years old. We talked about my husband and his girlfriend who don't like to travel like we do. We talked about traveling alone and doing the Camino alone and how it is easier to meet people when you are alone. You are more approachable and how we are more likely to make an effort to meet people when we are alone.

Well it is time to go to dinner. I am going to dinner with my sleep sac worn as a shawl to keep warm. I think it may be my new fashion statement.
