Day 57 - Bercianos - September 10 - Day 10 of 15
Well I think I left off yesterday wondering what new excitement would happen today. Well Rosa has been fussing about her stomach bothering her for a few days, this morning she was doubled over in pain and she looked like I do when I had the perforated ulcer. Both Merusa and I tried to get her to go to the doctor, but she would have none of it. When I had mine I went on a nine mile walk. My friends suggested that might not be a good idea. I very flippantly said, it appears my stomach is going to hurt whether I walk or not, so I may as well walk.
A out six miles later I had to concede, I couldn't walk any more. A friend ran and got her car and drive me to my car. I still wasn't sure if I was going to go to the hospital or not. It was a bright sunny day and the idea of sitting in the emergency waiting room didn't appeal to me. But luckily I decided to go, but I went to the bookstore in the mall to get something to read while I was waiting. I got a People magazine a d then drove to the hospital. I knew I was in pain when I got to the hospital because I was trying to read the magazine and I couldn't. lol it was in Spanish. I didn't have to wait long. They heard my symptoms and took me back, put me in a bed, hooked me up to an IV, and started rolling me around for tests. At some point they rolled me up to this guy standing in the hallway. He introduced himself as doctor so and so. He said we need to do surgery right now. You have a perforated ulcer and it is bad. I'm thinking it's Saturday and this guy doesn't have a lot to do so he's trolling the hospital hallways looking for surgeries. Similar to attorneys chasing ambulances, doctors chasing gurneys. So I believe we are going to have a discussion, so I say something about my grand kids are coming tomorrow for a week and I throwing a surprise party for my husband next Saturday, so could we schedule it for sometime after that. He looked at me as though he might need to have a guardian appointed for me. He said in a very direct tone, "I don't think you understand, we either operate on you now or you will die." Hmm I thought decisions, decisions, and finally said, "Well, since you put it that way, I guess I'll have the surgery."
But I digress. So when Rosa started bending over and clutching her stomach, I got concerned. Fortunately her daughter came to visit and after assessing the situation decided her mother was going to the hospital whether she liked it or not. So we are waiting to see if she is ok. Meanwhile we've been playing a person short today, but all is well. At least to this point.
As it turns out Rosa is well too. She went to Leon and had a bunch of tests done and they think she inhaled too much of the bed bug killer stuff, which I think is mostly ammonia. That was what she thought is was before she went. We did okay without her but we've all become so accustomed to working with each other that it was sort of like something was missing. The pilgrims didn't notice though, they all had a great time. After dinner they gave Merusa about a one or two minute applause. It was slightly embarrassing, but also touching. I made ensalada mixta, my favorite salad. It had lettuce, tomatoes, corn, olives, onions, carrots, and tuna. Not only did look pretty with all the different colors, it tasted yummilicious.
